About Us
Our backyard. Much of the northern wilderness we call "canoe country" is as much water as land. In winter, the labyrinth of lakes, muskegs and bogs is transformed into a network of smooth, level pathways. Not surprisingly, the same nomadic indigenous peoples who developed and refined the canoe also perfected tools and techniques for exploiting this unique terrain in its winter guise. The key to their elegant and efficient mode of winter travel lies in teaming the snowshoe with the toboggan. Unlike the backpacker on snowshoes, who often has to struggle to carry as little as sixty to eighty pounds, a tobogganer can very easily haul his or her bodyweight in gear. This greater capacity allows the tobogganer to pack a roomier tent and a wood stove for heat, making possible a surprising level of comfort, convenience and safety.
More than meets the eye. Much of the current literature devoted to winter camping and, unfortunately, most of the available gear, were adapted from the technical extremes of mountaineering and polar exploration. An exception to this is the Snow Walker's Companion, a comprehensive guide to winter camping with heated tents and traditional gear.
A mixed bag. We believe in a "combined" approach to winter gear, which acknowledges the benefits of both traditional and modern gear and equipment. We have a strict, sustained commitment to providing only gear of very high quality and durability to withstand the demanding arctic environments in which it is designed to perform, safely and reliably. This is our mission.
Traditional inspiration. Here at Snowtrekker™ Tents, we have found inspiration in the older traditions while still keeping an eye to innovations in modern materials, especially when they combine tried and true materials and methods of arctic adventure with advancements in contemporary materials. Traditional winter camping skills and gear are the foundation of all Snowtrekker™ products. |
